21 mistakes and counting! | Ford Transit Van Build Debrief Part 2

I recorded this video back in June of 2025 and have sat on it ever since. I’m not sure why. But I’m finally editing it into two videos. Part 1 is all about what we got right on the van build, which I published last week. Part 2 (this video) is about what we got wrong or what I would change about the campervan.

Here are the 21 things I would do differently on my next DIY van build:

1) Composting toilet with a 12v fan for ventilation or use public toilets for #2s

2) Everything 12v, no AC components or outlets, use a small 12v inverter or solar charge battery bank instead

3) Diesel heater with a built-in thermostat like a Webasto

4) Overhead storage in the cab

5) Thicker cushions 3″ isn’t enough, 5″ would be better, or do without and use swivel seats instead because they’re way comfier

6) Prioritized views when designing the layout/floorplan

7) Plan, plan, plan (before starting the build)

-research each component before sourcing them (become an architect)

-use Sketch-up to map out all systems and structures

-create a mock-up using cardboard boxes to see if you like the design – this is inspired by Humble Road

8) Planned the placement of the exhaust fan and a/c to maximize the space on the roof more effectively for solar

9) Installed all exterior components first

10) Switched the order of installation to reduce delays

11) Less framing to save on weight and better-planned, strategic framing

12) More support for the floor

13) Shifted shower back against bed; Shifted seating area across from sliding door OR

14) Narrower cabinets for a wider walkway

15) Added a door to the bathroom for privacy when I have guests / Partial bathroom/shower

16) Built all of the cabinetry out of 1/2” or 3/4″ maple ply instead of birch ply; easier installation of hinges, kreg screws, more weight

17) Different Transit; medium and shorter in length – go up the road to the sun if the vehicle is 21′ or less

18) No fixed bed; convertible bed with a chaise lounge near rear doors, more interior space

19) Propane over electric, hmmm, propane hot water heater and 2-burner cooktop

20) Installed a 12v a/c with a heat pump option (does this exist?) IT DOES!!!

21) Choose your paint colors wisely, white is not a good option, at least not near high traffic areas or areas bound to get dirty and dusty (the entire van?!? lol)

Oh my gosh, this list is so long! But life is full of learning opportunities. And so is building a van to live in full-time for the very first time.

Let me know what questions you have. I’m happy to share what I learned along the way, and to learn from those who have also tried this lifestyle.
