Every year, when Blaze’s Gotcha Day rolls around, I plan a fun little outing for us. This year, we found ourselves camped just outside of White Sands National Park. Luckily, this is one of the few parks where dogs are allowed almost everywhere, as long as they’re on a leash. So, we spent some time exploring the shimmery ground and soaking in the beautiful surroundings!

Upon our arrival, I drove to the very back of the park, where it was less busy. We got there early to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. I packed a liter of water for Blaze and a Gatorade for me. (If you plan on hiking further, bring even more water!).

We headed out on the Alkali Flat Trail, which is 4.5 miles long if you follow the entire route. Speaking of the route, it’s a fun little wayfinding exercise trying to locate the red markers planted in the sand every hundred yards or so.

Between the dryer air, her excitement, and exerting energy while navigating the deep sand, it was important to me that we turn around earlier than usual. I didn’t want to get too far into the park before heading back out of fear I’d have to carry her to the van. So, I paid attention to Blaze’s cues to see when she was starting to show signs of fatigue.

Thankfully, we made it back to the van. I wonder what we’ll do next year? πŸ€”
