It’s become a tradition for me to spend my birthday on a trail. I’ve gone backpacking a handful of times since this all started. And today was no different. I made it a point to visit the Grand Canyon National Park the week of my birthday (back in May).
While there, Blaze and I did a lot of hiking in the national forest just outside of the park and along the south rim. She even got to bark at some elk at Shoshone Point.
But I couldn’t take her below the rim.

So, I boarded her for a day (thank you to the NPS for offering this service!) and hiked down to the three-mile rest house along Bright Angel Trail before making the arduous hike back up. I covered 6.1 miles and 2,112 ft of elevation gain. Not bad at all.

The heat got to me a bit on the way up. I packed way too many things that I didn’t end up using, like my trekking poles and my lightweight puffy jacket. But oh well! It was such a treat to board Blaze and have some time to myself for a change.

The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is very welcoming to dogs — I highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area.
